Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom will announce his retirement after 20 NHL seasons at a news conference Thursday afternoon, a source told ESPN.com.
Having spent the entirety of his 20-year NHL career in Detroit, Lidstrom leaves the game with an impressive resume.
Lidstrom, a surefire Hall of Famer, won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman seven times. He was a runner-up three other times. Lidstrom is a member of the exclusive "Triple-Gold" club, winning both an Olympic gold medal (2006) and an IIHF World Championship (1991) with Sweden in addition to the four Stanley Cups he won with the Red Wings.
